Sky Tower lights red for $1 million raised for Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge

The Sky Tower lit red as 900 firefighters across the country smashed the $1 million mark in their fundraising for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand’s Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge this Saturday.

The Sky Tower will be lit red until Saturday 13 May for the event which raises funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand to continue supporting the six Kiwis diagnosed with a blood cancer or related condition every day.

The event, now in its 13th year, sees 900 firefighters from across the country race up 1,103 steps of the Sky Tower carrying 25kg of equipment. This is the third year running that the event has raised more than $1 million, and this year’s event is set to break the 2016 record of $1.16 million.

SKYCITY has been a proud sponsor of Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand for thirteen years, supporting the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge, Step Up Sky Tower Stair Challenge and SKYCITY Dining for a Difference events, which cumulatively have raised nearly $8 million.

The Sky Tower is the southern hemisphere’s tallest man-made structure based in the heart of Auckland, and is one of New Zealand’s most recognisable landmarks.

SKYCITY lights the Sky Tower for charities or community initiatives that we support financially, or to mark national holidays, milestones or other celebrations or events.
