Fireworks and Kiwi music headline SKYCITY’s New Year’s Eve

To top off the Sky Tower’s 20th birthday year, SKYCITY Auckland will again be funding Auckland’s popular public fireworks display off the iconic landmark that will lead the world in welcoming 2018.

On Federal Street below, Sons of Zion play an outdoor gig while Hedlok Live (Chef Fu and King Kapisi) will bring in the New Year at SKYCITY Auckland’s twentyone.

SKYCITY Auckland General Manager Hotels and Sky Tower, Brad Burnett, says the Sky Tower fireworks are an important focal point to the city’s celebrations.

“SKYCITY is proud to deliver the annual Sky Tower fireworks display that’s enjoyed by locals and visitors across various vantage points in Auckland, and watched by many millions more via internet and TV broadcast here in NZ and worldwide. It’s particularly special this year; the Sky Tower’s 20th birthday year,” says Mr Burnett.

The pyrotechnic display at midnight will again be synchronised to music played on More FM (91.8 FM). From 9pm, there will also be a large laser countdown and themed laser animation show beamed on to the northwest and northeast sides of the Sky Tower from 9pm. Twice as many lasers will be used for this show, allowing more content with greater detail to be projected onto the Tower.

This year, TVNZ will broadcast the Sky Tower’s New Year’s Eve fireworks live on TVNZ 1, 2, DUKE, OnDemand and 1 News Now for Kiwis around the country watching from home. For those not near a television, there will also be a livestream of the fireworks on the SKYCITY Auckland Facebook page, starting at 11.45pm.

SKYCITY Auckland is partnering again with PyroStar International and Soulstorm Lasers Ltd to deliver the New Year’s Eve show.

“The fireworks top off a massive night for SKYCITY, with around 30,000 visitors coming to enjoy our entertainment, restaurants and bars, free concert on Federal Street and the best view of the fireworks in Auckland,” says Mr Burnett.

From 6pm until 1am a free concert on Federal Street will honour Kiwi artists with a line up of reggae, funk and soul bands Sons of Zion, Hipstamatics, Three Houses Down and as well as top 40 DJs throughout.

Chef Fu and King Kapisi AKA Hedlok Live, two of South Pacifics most versatile hip hop, reggae, dancehall, R&B, rock vocalists in the country, will play their first gig of the New Year at twentyone on Level 3 of SKYCITY from 12.30am.
