SkyCity unveils Auckland’s newest landmark

Auckland Sign 2026

The Auckland CBD has a vibrant new landmark today with the reveal of a massive AUCKLAND sign at the base of the Sky Tower. Joined by Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, the reveal showcased artwork designed to celebrate Auckland’s unique icons and heritage.

Standing over 10 metres wide and two metres high, the fully welded aluminium installation is an eye-catching addition to the city, with each of the eight letters weighing approximately 600 kilograms. These designs were created by local competition winners, the Auckland Blues, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, and Auckland Pride.

Students from Kōwhai Intermediate designed the letter 'K' on behalf of Variety - the Children’s Charity, creating an artwork that celebrates the vital support provided to tamariki throughout Tāmaki Makaurau.

SkyCity General Manager of Sales and Marketing, Caroline Ah Chong-Douglas, says the unveiling is a proud moment for the central city and everyone who calls Auckland home.

“We’ve watched this project grow from an engineering challenge into a beautiful community collaboration. Having Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson, mana whenua, and our artists here highlights the project's connection to the Auckland community. It’s more than just a sign, it’s a meeting place and the ultimate selfie spot for locals and visitors to share our city with the world.”

"A huge thank you to everyone who submitted their designs," says Ah Chong-Douglas. "With so much mahi put into every entry, narrowing it down to the final eight was a real challenge. I’m looking forward to seeing Aucklanders check out the sign over the next three weeks before the permanent gold finish takes over."

The installation is expected to become a central landmark for international visitors attending the New Zealand International Convention Centre and those exploring the SkyCity precinct, providing a permanent point of connection in the heart of Auckland.
