This Matariki, SkyCity celebrates the spirit of connection, reflection and renewal as we mark the Māori New Year.
As part of the celebrations, the Sky Tower will illuminate as the Matariki constellation appears in the winter sky, welcoming in the new year. On the morning and evening of 10 July, animated artworks by emerging artists will be projected onto Tāmaki Makaurau's most recognisable landmark. The projections will transform the city skyline into a canvas for contemporary Māori storytelling.
With support from the SkyCity Auckland Community Trust, the Sky Tower artworks bring together acclaimed mana whenua artist Graham Tipene and emerging artists from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and Ngā Manu a Toi, a collective grounded in tā moko and toi Māori.
The artworks explore the theme of Tāmaki Herenga Waka, which speaks to the coming together of people in Tāmaki Makaurau. The projections provide a platform for Māori artists to share stories of place, connection and community. Featured artists include Graham Tipene, Maraea Shaw, Arama Tamariki Shaw, Matiah Maia, Wairingiringi Toi and Kairangi Ihimaera.
Alongside the projections, SkyCity's popular Matariki Night Markets will return to SkyCity Plaza on 3, 4, 10 and 11 July.
The markets will feature Māori and Pasifika food vendors, live entertainment and kapa haka performances. Visitors can take part in raranga weaving workshops, whakairo carving demonstrations, poi workshops and temporary moko.
Beyond the night markets, Matariki celebrations continue with sunrise yoga on the Sky Tower's Main Observation Deck and a special dining experience at Metita, inspired by the Matariki stars and the traditions of Te Moana-nui-ā-Kiwa.
