Reused Egg Cartons finds an Egg-cellent purpose!

SKYCITY has been helping Auckland Council to ensure hundreds of precious free-range eggs are making their way safely to those that need them most.

Over the last month SKYCITY has saved more than 600 egg trays and boxes from its extensive kitchen operations to see them used by Auckland Council to ensure the safe carriage of free range eggs from Great Barrier Island to Auckland City Mission.

To date, the more than 600 egg trays and boxes have contributed to ensuring the 700-1000 eggs produced by the chickens each week can safely reach their destination.

Executive Chef Main Site, Fiona Ruane, is particularly passionate about sustainability and looks for all opportunities to see items re-used, and is pleased SKYCITY can put the boxes and egg trays to a good, practical use.

“We are delighted to assist Auckland Council and become part of their Environmental Heroes Group, it highlights to our team what we can do with our waste and the impact it can have on the environment.  We are really happy that the eggs now have a safe trip from the island to Auckland City Mission and those in need can enjoy fresh free-range eggs” says Ms Ruane.

The innovative project was started earlier this year when 200 chickens were placed on Great Barrier Island to tackle an invasion of Australian skinks and in turn been producing thousands of eggs. The abundance of eggs is donated to the Auckland City Mission, who distribute them to those in need through food parcels.

SKYCITY has taken significant steps to reduce its environmental impact in two key areas of focus: reducing energy consumption and reducing waste. Actions include implementing new waste management systems, managing efficient upgrades to significantly reduce energy use, and creative solutions such as closed loop recycling projects.

In July, SKYCITY committed to the setting of internationally accredited science-based targets to reduce its emissions, and targets will be set within the next six months. SKYCITY will be the first hospitality businesses in Oceania and one of just nine New Zealand companies to commit to the Science Based Target initiative.
